What is the Asus Chromebook C300?

Situated at the lowest point on the scale of entry-level models, the C300 is being billed as an ultra affordable laptop which doesn’t sacrifice too much performance in order make itself so affordable.

With this portable PC, Asus is looking to offer basic users a complete solution at a price that can’t be found anywhere else. In order to do so, the manufacturer had to make some difficult choices in terms of the computer’s display and sound capabilities.

So, is this Chromebook worth buying? Read the rest of this test to find out.

Design

With its highly standard design, the Asus C300 does not distinguish itself from other models by having a very sleek or refined profile.

The border around its display is fairly wide, which allowed the designers to provide a lot of room for the keyboard and trackpad.

The Chromebook’s plastic case is cheaper to produce than a more expensive aluminum version, which translates into savings for the consumer. This choice of materials also results in a lower weight. This computer weighs in at just 1.2 kg, making it highly mobile.

4 feet on the bottom of the case stop the computer from moving when placed on a flat surface. It also has two stereo speakers pointing outwards to avoid the sound from being muffled.

Most of the connectivity ports are located on the left side of the computer. It has a power port, which unfortunately is not a USB-C connection, an HDMI port, a USB 2.0 port, and an SD card slot, as well as a micro 3.5 mm headphone jack. On the right side is located an extra USB 2.0 port.

Asus designed the C300 to make it both simple and efficient. This computer is really not exceptional in any way, but neither is it lacking anything really important. The plastic used in the case is of high-quality, making the computer thin and light-weight, allowing it to be easily transported.

Display and sound capabilities

The Asus C300’s display is very decent given the computer’s price, and it’s not very shocking these days to find 1366×768 HD resolution of a 13 inch laptop.

However, the display’s luminosity is not that great in very bright environments such as outside in full sunlight. The display’s viewing angles are also not the best and pixels start to disappear when it is viewed from an extremely wide angle.

If you are looking for a Chromebook with an excellent display, you would be better off opting for a more expensive model like the Acer 14. If, on the other hand, you are satisfied with a decent display, you should not have any problems with the Asus C300.

In terms of sound, the speakers offer a loud and clear sound. Thanks to their orientation away from the computer, the sound is not very muffled – which is a good thing.

But, the sound quality produced by the speakers is average at best. There is no bass and the sound is very neutral.

The Chromebook is designed to work well for placing video calls, and watching videos, but it would be preferable to listen to music through high-quality headphones using the built-in headphone jack.

Keyboard and trackpad

The Asus C300’s keyboard is without a doubt one of its best features. The keys are responsive and allow for very fast typing.

The large space available under the keyboard is great for resting your wrists, which makes typing an even more comfortable experience.

The trackpad, as is true with most Chromebooks, does not disappoint either. It slides easily and the handy gestures make navigating the computers functionalities fast and easy.

This Chromebook is great for typing long text documents and emails thanks to its high-quality keyboard. What’s more, its trackpad makes it easy to navigate between different tabs and pages.

Performance characteristics and connectivity

For the price you shouldn’t expect the Asus C300 to be a war machine. However, thanks to its Intel Celeron N3060, its 4 GB of RAM and the optimizations afforded by the Chrome OS, this computer offers surprising performance.

Web surfing is fluid on both light and heavy-weight sites, and the Chromebook can handle having several tabs open at the same time with no difficulties.

With an Octane score of around 7000, it is one of the least powerful Chromebooks around, and falls far behind the Acer 14. It is more in line with the Asus Flip.

The C300 will probably feel just a little bit too limited for advanced users, but it is a perfect choice for basic users. This computer has no problem playing music and videos or surfing the web even when several pages are open at the same time.

In terms of connectivity, this computer does not disappoint. It has a dual band WiFi adapter which allows it to connect to networks from a great distance and to remain strongly connected. It is also Bluetooth 4.0 compatible, allowing it to connect effortlessly to any Bluetooth device.

Battery life

The fact that the C300 is so thin and light-weight already makes it highly mobile. Add to these already impressive characteristics its 10 hours of battery autonomy and you end up with an excellent device to take with you anywhere you go.

This impressive battery life can be attributed to the computer’s display which is not FULL HD resolution as well as to the optimizations which come from using the Chrome OS.

Should you but the Asus Chromebook C300?

For basic users who do not require high performance characteristics or a superb display, the Asus C300 is one of the best available low-cost choices.

In order to reach such a low price point, sacrifices had to be made. The display is decent without being anything more, and the sound quickly becomes distorted if the volume is raised too high.

However, the device’s extreme mobility – thanks to its light weight, its thin profile and its extremely long-life battery compensate in large part for its weak points if all you are looking for is an affordable laptop.

Verdict

If you are looking for a basic Chromebook which offers one of the best price to quality ratios on the market without sacrificing key functionality, the Asus C300 is a very good choice.
