The Criteria for Choosing your Display
Size and Dimensions of the Display Panel
Displays ranging in size from 24 to 27 inches currently dominate the market. We therefore recommend that you consider 24 inches as a minimum size and 32 inches as your maximum.
In reality, the price difference between a 22 inch and a 24 inch display is generally only around about 10 dollars, and for a gamer, this extra investment is totally worth it.
Concerning aspect ratio, we recommend 16:9 which is the most compatible with both video and video games.
It is common to speak of native or maximum resolution, this is the only resolution which produces a clear image on an LCD screen. The more precise the image, the more the information which is displayed. This definition will depend in large part on the number of inches of your display.
To give you an example, a classic 24 inch display has a resolution of 1920 x 1080, while a 4K display has a resolution of 3840 x 2160.
- FHD : 1920 x 1080
- WQHD (2K) : 2560 x 1440
- 4K HD : 3840 x 2160
2K displays with full QHD resolution (which represents 3.68 million pixels) offer almost two times the detail compared to Full HD. 4K resolution offers 8 times the detail of HD 720p!
IPS Panel or TN Panel?
When choosing a display panel which is well suited to gaming, it must be responsive, offer a good viewing angle, have excellent contrast, and have good colorimetry.
For playing video games, choose either IPS (In-Plane Switching) display panels or TN (Twisted Nematic) display panels. You will need to pay attention to the response time of IPS displays which should be less than 5 ms in order to play fast games such as FPSs. IPS displays are slowly taking over the market, the technology has been evolving and their response time is now close to rivaling that of TN displays.
Response Time, Contrast, Viewing Angle and brightness
Let’s not beat around the bush, these specifications don’t really mean much for gamers anymore. In reality, manufacturers provide data which is to their advantage!
If response times have been, over the generations, often divided in half, this is only because manufacturers are quoting the cycle time between black-white or even between black-white-black***.
A similar phenomenon occurs with viewing angles deemed to be “acceptable” by manufacturers which come at the cost of degraded colors***.
Whatever the case, except for graphic designer, the color rendering of all modern displays is at a “performance” level deemed acceptable for all uses.
Refresh Rate: 60 Hz / 120 Hz or 144 Hz?
This value generally varies between 50 and 144 Hz. The higher the rate, the more visual comfort is provided by the display. For epileptic users, a minimum refresh rate of 100 Hz is recommended.
A refresh rate of 60 Hz is sufficient because at this rate the human eye interprets the images to be in fluid motion (in video games for example). However, for displaying images with increased depth of field (3D) a 120 Hz LCD is the minimum necessary requirement since one image is needed per eye, therefore requiring twice the number of images.
It is also important to know that your graphics card needs to be capable of sending the same number of images per second. In this way, it is entirely useless to invest in a 144 Hz display if your graphics card is not powerful enough to keep up with it.
And what about G-Sync / Freesync?
G-Sync technology (Nvidia) – FreeSync (AMD) work to prevent image deformation. The problem stems from the lack of synchronization between the graphics card and the display. This is a problem which the V-Sync feature allows to be partially corrected, but not in a convincing way since it generates a tearing effect as a result. The G-Sync/FreeSync chip is integrated into the monitor in order to manage its refresh rate to allow it to be more in phase with the game’s animation rate.
On paper, the idea is quite simple: instead of working at a fixed refresh rate, the display adjusts the rate at which it displays images to the GPU’s calculation speed. In this way, the synchronization between the graphics card and the display becomes perfect and the tearing effect is eliminated.
G-Sync (Intel) – FreeSync (AMD) are therefore designed to produce a fluid, rapid, and sublime gaming experience. They synchronize the refresh rate of the display to that of your computer’s graphics processor to avoid image tearing all while reducing flickering due to input lag. With this technology, your games are more fluid, without lag, even in for the fastest action games such as adventure games, sports games and FPSs.
Computer Display Connectivity
You are likely to find several types of video and audio connectors at the back of a display.
These will determine what you will be able to connect to the display as well as the ability to use certain of the display’s features.
- VGA (The VGA is the analog ancestor to the DVI connector)
- DisplayPort (A small, new connector, totally digital and capable of carrying video and audio signals)
- HDMI (The HDMI connector is digital and capable of transporting audio and video signals)
- DVI (Digital input, this is the most common connector on displays)

Which Graphics Card Should I Choose in Order to Take Full Advantage of My PC’s Display?
Having a good PC display is good, but being able to take full advantage of it is much better!
Each reference we make to and LCD display is subdivided into several models in order to give you the price for each option: (Adjustable height, speaker, USB hub, etc.) You will need to thing about the features you require.
For FPS game players, always opt for the lowest response time (1 ms or 2 ms)
3D is still kind of a “gadget” feature. You won’t be able to use it for most things. The main advantage of 3D capable displays is their 144 Hz refresh rate.
22 Inch Displays:
I have chosen not to list any 22 inch displays for one good reason: the price of 22 inch displays is often very close to that of 24 inch models at the entry level. All you need to do is find that slightly larger model which costs a little more.
It would be a real shame not to take full advantage of your computer by limiting yourself to playing on a small display.

ASUS VG245H – FreeSync
